Mathematical Association of Tasmania

ABN: 99841054827

The Mathematical Association of Tasmania (MAT) was founded in 1960 by ML (Mac) Urquhart, a Mathematics lecturer at the University of Tasmania from 1947 to 1966. MAT’s logo includes a Euclidean geometry result widely known as Urquhart’s Theorem.

MAT is a non-profit, volunteer-run organisation supporting Tasmanian mathematics teachers and students from Kindergarten to Year 12. MAT aims to link teachers through association activities, our annual conference, and regular communication. We also provide opportunities for students to participate in mathematical events, such as our annual Maths Relays.

MAT is an affiliate of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT) and we work closely with other affiliates and the national body to promote excellence in mathematics education. In 2025, AAMT released Pedagogy in Mathematics, a position paper that outlines the key elements of effective mathematics teaching. It draws on the collective expertise of educators, researchers, and leaders in mathematics education. You can download the paper HERE.

We are also part of The Network of Education Associations in Tasmania (NEAT).
